Nothing In Life Is Perfect.

« on: October 12, 2007, 09:21:08 PM »

Hello everyone,
I just got back from my school trip to Joshua Tree National Park in California, and i came home to a 300 gallon pond
for my male 5 inch western painted turtle, Squeedgee!  Grin

My mom said i could get two more turtles if i get grades this trimester and next trimester,
so i think i'm going to get a 6 inch RES from my friend's father. The RES was abbused.
I do not know what the gender is of the RES. Should the gender matter?

I was also thinking about getting an Eastern Painted Turtle if i get good grades next trimester.

So my main question is, does the gender of the turtle matter for my WPT to be with?

Thanks in advance,
-Philip

Phillip – Congratulations on your new pond. I hope you have a good set up to turn the water and keep the pond clear. I have several turtles and they all have different personalities. Generally speaking the RES are a little more aggressive than the other sliders. That is GENEARLLY SPEAKING!! I have some painted in with the RES and the smallest painted is more aggressive. You will just have to see when they get together. You can watch them when you feed them and you can tell if one is more aggressive than the other. The gender should not matter.
When they get about 4 to 5 inches you can tell the male from the female. The male’s tail is larger than the female and the male’s nails will get longer.  Good Luck on your studies.

Thanks for your guys help.

I'm pretty sure our filtration system is good.
We hired our pond guy to build my turtle pond, and he takes
REALLY good care of our koi pond.

Hope everything goes well.  Cheesy

I have one more question--
I want to put some aquatic plants inside the pond and some plants
outside the pond. Are there any aquatic plants I can put in the pond
that the turtles won't eat?

Thanks,
-Philip

Okay, here are some pictures i just took of our koi pond and our turtle pond.
Sorry if some of the pictures aren't too good.  Tongue

This is our Koi pond. 20 - 30 goldfish and 5 koi live in this pond. [2500 gallons]

This is the filter for our Koi pond. It broke yesterday, so the waterfall to the pond and
the pump don't work. We're ordering a new filter, it'll cost about $1000.  Sad

Here's my turtle pond! It has a waterfall too.  Cheesy [300 gallons]

This is the filter for the turtle pond. It's underground and has a lid.

This is Squeedgee's new favorite place to hide, in the filter! Don't worry, he can't get stuck or hurt.
We already checked.  Smiley

Here's a better picture of Squeedgee. [Western Painted Turtle, 5"]

And last but not least, here's one of my plecos. His name is Snowball and he lives
in the turtle pond.  Tongue
I have another pleco in the turtle pond, but i couldn't find him.

I can't find Squeedgee.

Could he be hibernating?

I rescued 2 turtles last week from someone that was abusing them.
One is a 5" EPT and the other is a 6" RES.

I can't find the EPT either.
Could they both be hibernating?
