I cannot comment on which filter is the best, as I have not used them all. The two I have had the best luck with is Marineland 350 and the Fluval 405 canisters. They are quiet, easy to clean and not in or hanging around the tank. There are only the suction and discharge hoses that you see in the tank. The canister is under the tank in a cabinet of sitting on the floor. I like the idea of disconnecting he hoses and taking the canister to the sink and cleaning it. Also the changing the media is very easy.

I know they cost a little more, but they are worth it. The Marineland is fairly cheap among the canister filters. Check out the 350 on some of the web sites.

I also use several types of filters and canisters are by far the easier to use and clean. I am sure that some are more expensive than others but the over all handiness of canister override the small increase of the price. If you shop on the net you can get a reasonable price for one of your choice. If someone wants advice about which one I use I will be glad to tell what my choice of the canisters is. What you will want to do is make sure that the canister pumps at least 5 times the volume of your tank water.
