preparing for tasty phillip

« on: July 20, 2008, 01:32:41 PM »

hi all --

my new russian tort seems to be very active, is eating well, etc.  but he never seems to go to his water area.  i put him in there once or twice because i was afraid he couldn't find it or something, and he put his head underwater and seemed to drink ravenously.  but he was under for a while and i got scared and pulled him out.

i am still a new tort-mama, and am probably just being paranoid, but how much is he supposed to drink?  should he be sitting in the water more?  any help would be appreciated!

well im not a major tortoise fan but i wouldnt asume he would get overhydrated.... if he doesnt visit his water often you could saok him a couple times a week... but i dont believe that is the preference. try to get him to drink rather than soaking. always have the water available, an if he doesnt drink much you can always provide lots of lettuce an plants ful of moisture.  you can even spray them down with water to get in some extra hydration..... just some ideas.

in my russian setup i have a water dish always available..do you? your turtle may only need a sip here and there but if the is no water bowl present he may get extremely thirsry and gorge himself when you do soak him because he doesnt know when he will get water again.. just an idea.
